Amateur rugby league in York has been given a much needed shot in the arm with this year's Interworks competition set to attract its biggest entry in years.

The once hugely popular event has declined in numbers over the years, with an all-time low of just five teams entering last time.

But at a recent meeting to discuss this year's tournament, eight teams expressed interest in taking part - and there is still time for more to register.

Probable entries to date are Tang Hall WMC, Winning Post, York Police Panthers, Carpenters Arms, Guildford Construction, New Earswick Sports, Civil Service Old Boys and Castle Howard Ox.

A final meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 17 at South Bank WMC (7.30pm) when all monies and team sheets must be handed in.

Dates of matches will be decided on the night, with the finals to be held on Sunday, May 27. All games will be played at New Earswick Sports Club.

Any other teams interested in taking part can obtain further details and entry forms from Spen Allison on 01904-655041 or Eddie Loftus on 01904-763519.

A provisional date of has been pencilled in for the York and District Cup final between Selby Warriors and York Groves.

Organisers are looking at Saturday, May 12 at New Earswick Sports Club although that has yet to be confirmed.

The same two teams will contest the Accident Cup final on Easter Saturday, also at New Earswick, kick-off 2.30pm.
