ANYONE who thinks privatised railways are a success for anyone but shareholders and big business should have tried travelling to Liverpool on March 25. Northern Spirit seemed unaware that tens of thousands of people would be travelling to the England match, or unwilling to do anything to make their journey any easier. The excuse was that there was insufficient rolling stock to cope.
ABB closed the York carriageworks because there was apparently no demand for rolling stock. It's a mad system that closes down factories that are more than capable of producing the things that we need. Polls show that most people want the railways re-nationalised. The Labour Government, however, seems intent on pushing through yet more privatisation.
Many thousands will have the chance to vote for an end to privatisation because the Socialist Alliance intends fighting up to 100 seats at the next General Election.
