Movie stardom is set to beckon for some of York's leading tennis players.

The Lawn Tennis Association are to film the Fulford Spring Cup tournament, which is being staged this weekend, and the film will be circulated for showing round the country.

The tournament, now in its 24th year, is at Fulford Tennis Centre on Saturday, starting at 12.30pm.

A total of ten couples from around the York area have been invited to try to take the cup from the home team.

Keven Todd and Denise Bolam (Dunnington), Richard and Rosie Cantrell (Poppleton), Paul Colbeck and Helen Whikesmith (Pocklington), and Simon Watson and Fran Critchley (Bishopthorpe) are a few of the couples to challenge the cup holders, who are Steve Collins and Jill McCreedy, Neil Haw and Julie Reilly and Nigel Skelton and Jackie Heels.

A new pairing of Patrick Atkinson and Katie Hargreaves will also be playing, along with a strong contingent of ten pairings from the host club.

Meanwhile, there will be an extra incentive for up and coming players at the Spa Tennis Club in Harrogate.

The club, which boasts two teams in the Harrogate and District League, have introduced a special award for its junior category this season.

Named after Richard Camrass, who founded the club in 1948, the new award will go to the junior judged to have shown outstanding effort and playing improvement.
