Three people were killed and four injured in a day of carnage on North Yorkshire's roads.

Two people died and three were hurt in a head-on collision between a car and a motorbike on an unclassified road between Hunmanby and the Dotterel Inn, at Reighton, just off the A165 Scarborough to Bridlington road.

The crash involved a maroon Vauxhall Corsa, travelling towards Hunmanby, and a silver-blue Honda motorcycle, heading in the opposite direction. The man driving the car and the rider of the motorbike both died at the scene, while three female passengers in the car were taken to Scarborough District Hospital, one with serious injuries.

The motorcycle rider was identified by police as Keith Parkinson, of Cloughton, near Scarborough, though the identities of the other people involved have yet to be released. The road was closed for three-and-a-half hours following the accident.

Police are appealing for witnesses, or anyone who saw either vehicle prior to the crash, which happened at about 3pm yesterday, to contact Scarborough police on 01723 500300.

They are particularly interested in speaking to the driver of what is described as a white camper van-type vehicle, which is believed to have arrived at the scene from the direction of the Dotterel Inn minutes after the accident occurred.

However, the vehicle left the scene before police officers arrived.

In the second incident, an elderly man died and his passenger was seriously injured in a two-car collision on the A65 Skipton bypass at its junction with the A6131 Knaresborough Road. The accident involved a blue Ford Fiesta and a silver Ford Mondeo estate. The driver of the Fiesta and his female passenger, both elderly, were taken to Airedale General Hospital, near Keighley, where the driver died of his injuries. His passenger was said to be in a "poorly" condition with serious injuries. Also taken to Airedale General Hospital was the male driver of the Mondeo, who was not thought to be in a serious condition.

Any witnesses to this accident, which happened at about 12.40pm yesterday, are asked to contact Skipton police on 01765 793377.
