A special exhibition of valuable and rare artefacts which trace the story of some of the saints and martyrs connected with York Minster has gone on display in the Minster Chapter House.

The Saints and Martyrs Exhibition includes six panels of stained glass from the second phase of the St William window conservation project, the St Hilda Banner, an identical facsimile copy of the York Gospels, 13th century painted ceiling panels and a casting of the St Peter and St Paul ceiling boss.

Amanda Daw, who orchestrated the exhibition, said the 13th century ceiling panels were rarely displayed, and are normally kept in storage.

She said: "The ceiling panels are mostly in storage at the Minster, so this is a rare treat for people to have a look at them close up.

"The facsimile copy of the York Gospels is also an exciting aspect to the exhibition. The originals were made in Canterbury in 1000 and came to York in 1020. They are now held by York Minster archives and are one of the only pre-conquest gospel books that survived the Reformation."

The exhibition is open until Sunday, April 29. It costs £1 for adults to get into the Chapter House and accompanied children go free.
