Heworth teenager Oliver Couttie has been selected for the North-East of England under-16s representative hockey squad.

Couttie, a student at York's All Saints School, made the grade after first impressing at district and county level.

He also plays for club side City of York.

The 15-year-old comes from a hockey-playing family, his uncle, Paul, having played for Scotland Boys and his father, Mike for the county veterans. His older brother, Matthew, 17, also plays for City of York.

The select side have yet to play a match but train on the astroturf pitch at St John's College in York twice monthly.

"I got asked back to go for assessment days and when the North-East squad was selected I made the 18," he said. "If it all goes to plan, organisers are trying to get an under-16s team to go on tour, which would be excellent."
