IN the Evening Press last Saturday, there was a restuarant review by Simon Ritchie about the Alice Hawthorn pub in the village of Nun Monkton. The racehorse after which the pub was named was itself named after Alice Hawthorn, a famous American songwriter of the early 19th century. The best known song she wrote was Listen To The Mocking Bird, a song which is still sung by barbershop choirs in America.
