A PEDESTRIAN/CYCLE route is proposed for Knavesmire. The land upturned for this project forms part of the most attractive entrance into our city. The proposed track would pass by the foot of Tyburn Steps, should we not treat this monument with respect? It marks the spot where so many people have died through the ages, very often unfairly.

It seems to be hardly the place for zooming mopeds and motorcycles, which would most certainly be there, using what would become a playground for bicycles.

A cycle track is also proposed for Hob Moor, where people already cycle at will. Surely there is no need to make a special path.

Hob Moor is a conservation area. So much in nature is fast disappearing, we should help to preserve what we have by leaving the sky larks and special plants for future generations.

To my mind that would be worth a great deal more than cycle tracks.

...YORK City Council is considering an idea to build a pedestrian/cycle route on Knavesmire. They also wish to do the same sort of thing on Hob Moor linking the railway underpass to the north and west sides of the Hob Moor.

These areas are already 'open' to walkers and are areas of nature conservation and of historical interest. I fear these ideas if implemented could do harm. They would encourage moped and light motorbike riders and other sorts with dubious motives. The underpass, if refurbished and lit, could well attract glue sniffers and drug users and alcoholics and it could well be 'unsafe' for other people.

The council's idea is no doubt well meaning, but I ask them to please think again and leave these areas as they now are. Please spend our money on something else.
