IT'S Australia to the rescue as York-based Corus Rail, Consultancy suffers the effects of a national shortage of rail electrification engineers.

Kelvin Davis, 35, who hails from Kempsey in northern Australia, has been appointed principal engineer in charge of electrification at the Corus Rail Consultancy's York division at Hudson House in Toft Green.

Previously senior project manager at Vector, New Zealand power company, Kelvin's 11 years within the rail sector has included the post of overhead line electrification engineer for the State Rail Authority of New South Wales, Australia, and senior rail consultant for TMG International.

Having settled in to his new home in Kirk Hammerton with his wife, Susan, he is developing an overhead line electrification team at Corus.

His aim is to match the company's rapidly-expanding signalling section within two years. Jim Veitch, director of railway systems at Corus Rail Consultancy, said: "We are addressing the shortage of skilled electrification engineers within the UK rail industry by recruiting from abroad. Kelvin brings significant overseas experience to the company which will help him develop a strong overhead line electrification section."
