North Yorkshire's Simon Dyson was in seventh heaven as he returned to form with a bang in the Volvo PGA Championship.

The Malton and Norton ace carded a final day three-under 69 for an overall seven-under total of 281 (68 72 72 69) that clinched joint 14th place in a field studded with some of the game's major players.

That put him in the money in the prestigious event as well as demonstrating a return to the consistency that marked out his rookie season last year with several championship triumphs.

Star names who trailed Dyson in the championship, which was won by massive outsider Andrew Oldcorn, included Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam Ernie Els and Tomas Bjorn.

But the day belonged almost totally to tournament winner Oldcorn.

The 41-year-old who, until hitting the £333,330 jackpot at Wentworth, had not won for six years is now setting his sights on capturing a first Ryder Cup cap.

When he tees off in the Victor Chandler British Masters at Woburn on Thursday he knows it could be just 72 holes away.

Up from 98th to seventh in the points race in one mighty leap, Oldcorn requires one more good pay-day to be part of fellow Scot Sam Torrance's team at The Belfry in September.

This week's first prize is £208,330, but Oldcorn has a new rival for it following Lee Westwood's late decision to play after missing the halfway cut on Saturday.

Oldcorn need fear nobody judging by the way he held off Nick Faldo and Angel Cabrera to become the oldest PGA champion since Neil Coles in 1976.
