AN activist in the East Riding Labour Party has been left shocked by what he describes as an "act of political vandalism."

Pocklington resident George McManus had nailed his colours to the mast by placing a large 'Vote Labour' sign in his garden.

But when he woke up on Sunday morning, he found the sign had not only been defaced but attacked with a saw.

"The damage is fairly comprehensive," said Mr McManus.

"At first I thought it could be some lads on the way home from the pub. But then I saw some nearby roadworks, and all the cones were still in their places, nothing had been touched.

"That led me to believe this had been done deliberately. If that is the case, it is a quite appalling act of political vandalism and intimidation."

He added: "At the moment it is a mystery. I have left it in the hands of the police."
