Bosses at Malton Foods' parent company Uniq plc are remaining tight-lipped over reports that they are to sell off the pig processing firm.

The factory is reported to be on the market and has already attracted potential buyers from Holland and Denmark.

The reports suggest that the Dutch Rabobank is handling the Malton sale and is believed to have received final offers from interested parties.

Speculation about the sale of Malton Foods has been mounting for months as a result of a series of crises - culminating in the foot and mouth scourge - which has led to a slide in profits.

A spokeswoman for Uniq said: "I am not able to confirm that Malton Foods is up for sale.We are currently proposing an industrial solution to Malton Foods - we have to find a way of rationalising."

But a spokesman from Rabobank confirmed the company has had dealings with Uniq.
