A YORK couple who met while walking beside the River Ouse in the city were celebrating their golden wedding on Saturday.

George and Mavis Saunders, of Appleby Place, Tang Hall, got chatting after their chance riverside meeting and the couple's relationship blossomed from there.

Said 69-year-old Mavis: "I was out with a friend of mine and he was out with a friend of his. We sat down and got talking. We've been together ever since."

George, now 72, had arrived in York about a year earlier having spent his formative years abroad. He was born in Calcutta, India.

He took on a number of jobs in York following their marriage, including one at the Co-op in George Hudson Street, while Mavis spent time doing part-time work at The Retreat.

The couple have eight children (David, Carole, Linda, Jean, Phillip, Sandra, Maria and Mark), 17 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

As well as the regular family gatherings for parties, George and Mavis are also keen on reading, doing puzzles and gardening.
