York boxers achieved a hat-trick of success when Huntington Working Men's Club hosted a show featuring fighters from across the north.

Luke Atkin, Graham Fern and Glenn Banks won their respective bouts to the delight of the large home crowd.

Atkin, 13, from Tang Hall, took on Robert Vickers, from Bishop Auckland, who was a semi-finalist in this year's National School Championships.

Vickers came out on the attack with a combination of hooks, but Atkin used his speed well and managed to send Vickers stumbling across the ring with a straight right hand.

The referee gave Vickers an eight count and Atkin was able to hang on to his advantage to win by a unanimous decision.

Next up for York on the eight-fight programme was Clifton welterweight Graham Fearn. He faced experienced Grimsby boxer Darren Benson.

Fearn's speed and power quickly began to tell on his opponent. He had Benson in trouble in the second round and then knocked him down in the third with a thunderous right hand.

The referee soon stopped the contest, Benson being unfit to continue.

The final bout saw welterweight Glen Banks, from Huntington, come up against Richard Grey from the Cotgrove Boxing Club.

Both started strongly but Banks stole the advantage in the second round, pushing forward with fast combinations.

Gray was given an eight count and Banks went on to win the fight on a unanimous decision.

Three other York boxers scheduled to take part - Danny Wright, Hassan Khrelbani and Mark Draper - did not fight due to injury and inavailability of their opponents.
