A third bridge linking Malton and Norton could be on the cards after councillors agreed to look into the idea.
Members of Malton Town Council voted in principle to back a feasibility study which could cost up to £8,000.
If grant funding can be provided by the Ryedale Area Partnership scheme the study could settle the question.
Coun Chris Harding said discussions had been taking place with Norton Town Council about building a new bridge over the Derwent.
"Suggestions have been made that the bridge could go over the river near Norton Ings," he said.
"As far as I know though this will be difficult as there is a lot of protected wildlife around there.
"The bridge plans cannot go ahead unless this survey is carried out.
"This will look at things like whether there is a need for another bridge, if people would use it and whether it is possible to build one and how much it would cost."
