FROM one mayor to another - "our hearts and prayers are with you".

The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Irene Waudby, has written to New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani to express the city's support and sympathy.

"Like millions of people across the world I am shocked and horrified at today's terrorist attacks in the United States," she said.

"We can barely imagine the death and terror which these attacks have brought to thousands of innocent people in New York and other American cities as well as the crew and passengers of the hijacked aeroplanes.

"I am sure I can speak for everyone in York in publicly expressing our condolences to the American people."

She also wrote to William Farish, American Ambassador to Britain.

Flowers are being left at the Guildhall and dozens of people have signed a condolence book.

In her letter to Mayor Giuliani she wrote: "May I express my sincere condolences following the horrific and devastating incidents that occurred in New York.

"I know that the people of York, England, have great sympathy for all those who have suffered and are still suffering from this terrible event. Our hearts and prayers are with you and the citizens of New York at this very difficult time."

She added:"The events leave an indelible mark in history because of their nature and I join others in hoping we never see their like again. The strength and hope so characteristically American will support and carry you through the coming days."

- Firefighters from York raised £3,000 from city pub drinkers last night on top of £1,400 collected in the day. The money will go to their colleagues in New York. They will be out collecting again tonight.
