VETERAN TV astronomer Sir Patrick Moore has officially unveiled a groundbreaking new facility for North Yorkshire stargazers and the public.

The presenter of The Sky At Night joined members of the Scarborough and District Astronomical Society to open the astronomy facility at Dalby Forest, near Pickering, where the night skies, unpolluted by light sources on the ground, provide ideal conditions.

The facility features two purpose-built observatory domes, each housing a telescope - one a powerful model featuring an 18.75-inch reflecting mirror.

The observatories have been built next to Dalby Forest Visitor Centre, through a unique partnership between the society and the Forestry Commission, which runs the 8,600-acre beauty spot.

The telescopes will be available to the public on the first Friday of every month to give fledgling stargazers an insight into astronomy. The society also hopes to host schools and other interested parties. The first open night will be on Friday, October 5.

John Harper, the society's president and founder, said: "This is one of the largest public telescopes in northern England and it's fitting that Sir Patrick should officially declare it open. He has inspired generations of stargazers over the years and we hope, in our own small way, to follow that shining example."

Sir Patrick said: "I am very honoured and delighted to be here. This sort of facility is absolutely vital for creating the astronomers of the future and it gives many people, including lots of youngsters, a good interest."
