YORK Wasps today announced a startling new transatlantic sponsorship deal.

The New York Economic Development Council is to be the Rugby League club's main sponsor for the 2002 season.

The deal is going ahead despite the chaos and disruption caused in the city by the terrorist atrocities.

Wasps directors said it was obviously a difficult time for the NYEDC, and they had wondered whether they should offer to pull out of the deal.

"However, they have assured us that they are fully committed to the sponsorship, and developing an ongoing relationship with the club and the business community in York, with whom they feel a natural affiliation in name."

The directors also revealed today that they have begun discussions with City of York Council about the possible purchase of the Huntington stadium at Monks Cross, along with nearby land.

Chairman John Stabler said that such an acquisition could fit in with plans to redevelop the stadium, and also the proposed new park and ride site and new retail development in the area.

The developments come only a year after the club, based at the Huntington Stadium, was on the verge of extinction with massive debts.

Although the club finished last season bottom of the Northern Ford Premiership, there is a new atmosphere of optimism, with plans to break into the Super League within three years.

The directors said they were excited that within 12 months the club had no debts and was making a decent trading profit.

"From a disastrous situation the club is now looking forward to a bright future," said Mr Stabler.

Mr Stabler said the club would have a new song to the tune of Frank Sinatra's New York, New York. The song would be called You York, You York.

Under the new York sponsorship deal, the NYEDC's Internet address, newyorkbiz.com, will be displayed on the fronts of players' shirts.

The sponsorship has been obtained for York by World Rugby League, who have also helped Wasps win associate sponsorship from 20 companies, including big names such as Gillette and Samsung, who will each have a pitch perimeter board at all home matches. Samsung's name will also be carried on players' sleeves.

The directors also revealed that the club is appointing top Australian coach Leo Epifania as head coach.

And it will also have at least ten "exciting" new players next season, some of whom will be of international stature.

"It's a massive boost," said vice-chairman Russell Greenfield. "It's the best thing the club has ever known."

The deal was for one year, but it was possible it would be extended.
