GERMAN teenager Volker Beiderich looks like being a great acquisition for City of York Hockey Club.

The 17-year-old was among the scorers as York continued their build-up for the new Northern Hockey league division one season with a 4-1 win at Leeds.

He was impressive in right defence and netted the third goal with a devastating drag flick from a short corner. Gordon Jennings, another newcomer to City's ranks, had a good debut in midfield.

York came from behind to win, substitute Kyle Hogg equalising with his first touch at the far post, and Mark Moisley put them ahead. Moisley also got the fourth goal. New-look City of York II also won 4-1, beating Adel. Rob Blackburn and John Raper created the opening for Richard Jenkin to score.

Colin Moore scored a hat-trick. Giles Pike and Steve Jack made their debuts for City of York III in their 3-1 defeat at Adel II, Matthew Todd scoring the York goal.

Edward Shouksmith (2), Roz Ramli, John Raper, Jules Bellerby and Richard Jenkin were on target as City thumped Adel III 6-1. City of York V, promoted to Yorkshire League Division Six last season, went down 3-2 at Adel IV in a pre-season game. There were goals galore as City of York VI skipper Clive Mills-Hicks scored a hat-trick in his side's 6-4 win against Adel V. Also on target were Alan Crompton (2), who was making his debut for York VI and Tim Downey.

Stamford Bridge won the annual York Costcutter York and District Ladies Hockey League rally hosted by York Olympics at the University of York.

They made a fine start, beating Rowntree 1-0 in their opening game, then drawing 0-0 with Ryedale and finished their seven match programme unbeaten. The winners' trophy, which Stamford Bridge held in 1991 and 1993, was presented to skipper Jane Foster.
