TRAINING might not be the most exciting word in the business lexicon, but as virtually every businessman will know to his or her cost, an untrained workforce is likely to be a less motivated workforce.

And from the trainee's point of view, training means better job opportunities all round.

The number of jobless might be below the million mark but, a generation ago, even that lowish figure would have been considered unacceptable.

With the current rumblings to the effect that the services industry could be starting a downturn, things could get trickier for people who are seeking new jobs. This is no reason for despair, however. The opportunities do exist out there and a key factor is to stay ahead of the game.

It might appear to be a statement of the blindingly obvious to say that having the right qualifications helps. However, it is something that many people fail to appreciate. When two or three people are going head-to-head for a job, the fact that person A has taken their training a step further than B and C can make all the difference.

Anyone wanting to return to work, for example mothers who have had a baby break, will find a changing world. In particular, the computer is a part of most people's working life. Opportunities abound from basic computing for the terrified courses to more in-depth study which raises students' levels of competency in IT and computer skills.

The working world will welcome with open arms those whose qualifications are 'up to speed'.

Finding the appropriate training is important, too. While university is an extremely attractive option, it is not right for everyone.

Both the Blair Government and the Tories under John Major have displayed an obsession with putting more and more young people into higher education.

Some people aren't academically suited to this avenue; others would simply be happier to start their working careers earlier, but don't know how to begin, or could find more appropriate training within an FE or specialist non-university college.

So, whether you are looking to hire or be hired, take a proper look at the world of training. It could pay dividends and more quickly than you think.
