JOSEPH Rowntree edged out Queen Margaret's, Escrick, in the York final of the National Schools Netball Tournament at Joseph Rowntree School.

They won 3-2 in a thrilling final on their home courts as the school continued its domination of the local netball scene.

In their group games, Joseph Rowntree beat Bootham 6-2, The Mount 10-2 and Millthorpe 12-1 and drew with Huntington, who had also won all their matches.

Both teams went through to the semi-finals with Joseph Rowntree progressing as group winners thanks to a better goal difference.

Group two was also a tight affair with Queen Margaret's beating All Saints 1-0 to advance to the semi-finals as winners.

Extra time was needed in the semi-finals with Queen Margaret's beating Huntington 7-6 and Joseph Rowntree defeating All Saints 7-4.

Joseph Rowntree just had the edge in the final against Queen Margaret's but both sides will go through to the county round of the competition at Scarborough on November 24.

The winning Joseph Rowntree team was Mel Ward (capt), Steff Lauff, Kathryn Ward, Katie Aldous, Helen Jamieson, Jenna Garnett and Edith Bourne.

Ward, Lauff, Bourne, Garnett, Rosie Wright and Cheryl Fairclough have been selected to represent North Yorkshire.

They are among 14 girls from the school to earn county selection. The others are U19: Helen Cordell, Marion Willis, Helen Birdsall.

U16: Nicola Bailey, Charlene Woodward, Emily Fowler, Lorraine Waudby, Katie Caffrey.

Queen Margaret's did win the Under 14 York 'B' tournament which was run on a round robin basis.

The final positions were: 1 Queen Margaret's, 2 St Peter's, 3 Joseph Rowntree, 4 All Saints, 5 Huntington.

FOOTBALL

Woodthorpe, Barlby Bridge, Robert Wilkinson, St Aelred's, Poppleton Road and St Wilfrid's were the six group winners in the York Cade Trophy six-a-side competition.

They will contest the finals on Saturday at Clifton Green Primary School (formerly Kingsway), starting at 9.30am.

The two most successful teams will go forward to the North Yorkshire six-a-side finals which will be played on Saturday, November 10, in the Scarborough area.

ATHLETICS

THE Annual Meeting of the York and District Schools Athletics Association will be held on Tuesday, October 30, at 4.30pm at Millthorpe High School.

The AGM of the North Yorkshire Schools' Athletic Association will be held on Monday, November 19, at at Thirsk School (5.15pm).

TENNIS

ST Peter's School, York, Under 15 girls team won the HSBC British Schools Tennis Area Tournament.

They won the York-area event to go forward to represent York in the North East region tournament where they lost 5-1 against Wakefield Girls High, who were representing the West Yorkshire Area, at Leeds on Saturday.

The St Peter's team which won the York area final was Emma Townsend, Amanda Holmes, Alex Kaars Sijpesteijn, Claire Taylor and Lara Gibbs.
