AN 18-YEAR-OLD York man has admitted he carried out a "timorous and half-hearted" cigarette robbery on a Clifton newsagent.

Thomas Rathbone, formerly of Queen Anne's Road, Bootham, pleaded guilty on the day he was due to stand trial at York Crown Court.

He admitted robbing Kevin Semark of cigarettes worth £11.58 on July 25 at the newsagent's shop in Scarborough Terrace, Clifton.

His barrister, Martin Rudland, said: "This was what could be categorised, so far as this defendant is concerned, as a timorous and half-hearted robbery."

Rathbone was released on bail to a Lincoln address so pre-sentence reports can be prepared.

A 17-year-old youth has already admitted the robbery. He was remanded in custody after he was caught breaching a curfew a few days after his arrest and his sentencing was adjourned until after Rathbone's trial.

Both robbers will be sentenced together later this month at York Crown Court.
