A BLIND pensioner who was robbed of her handbag and white cane by a thief told how she has been overwhelmed by the kindness of York people.

Courageous Mary Grainger, 72, was out walking at shops near her Chaloners Road home, late last month, when the thief struck in a cowardly attack.

Speaking immediately after the attack, Mrs Grainger told the Evening Press how she had felt someone in front of her.

She added that her bag had been lifted over her head "before I knew it."

Police condemned the thief but Mrs Grainger was defiant. She said: "I wasn't scared, I was really angry."

Since the incident, the Dringhouses pensioner said she has been amazed by the reaction of people in the city.

She has received cash donations from concerned people, one of which, for £20, was sent anonymously to the Evening Press.

Mrs Grainger said: "I have received three donations from people since I was attacked. The way people have responded has been overwhelming.

"I was on the phone talking to people for about three days after it happened. Everyone has been so generous.

"It has definitely restored my faith in human nature. I always knew there were more good people than bad people out there but this proves it.

"I want to thank everyone who has helped me. I am very grateful."

York Police today said they still wanted to hear from anyone who had witnessed the attack.

"Inquiries are still continuing and no-one has yet been apprehended. People who have information should contact us on (01904) 631321," a spokesman said.
