Poppleton 'A' team started the Focus Fireplaces York and District Table Tennis League winter season with a 10-0 win in division one over newly promoted INL 'B' team.

Mark Smith and Richard Moss made their league debuts for Poppleton 'A' along with regular player Mark Hughes, who continues to improve every season.

Poppleton could well push for honours this season if they can keep the same team together all season.

John Hughes and Vic Smith each scored three wins as York RI 'B' beat Bootham Conservative Club 'B' 9-1.

Alfie Potter was unbeaten for INL 'A' in their 5-5 draw with Bootham Conservative Club 'A'.

Dave Burnham's three wins helped Coneysthorpe 'A' draw 5-5 with last seasons runners up Fulford Road WMC 'A'.

In division two, Poppleton 'B' opened their account with an 8-2 win over promoted Northern Electric, Dave Rawlings winning three for Poppleton.

Tim Smith won three for York RI 'C' in their 7-3 win over Bootham Conservative Club 'C'.

The match between the two Nestl Rowntree teams ended 5-5. Keith Webster and Stu Stevens won two each for the 'A' team and Jill Schofield and Dave Robinson the same for the 'B' team.

Martin Symons won three as INL 'C' drew 5-5 with BT 'A'.

In division three, Poppleton 'E' beat Terry's 9-1, with three wins each for Simon Moss and Richard Collier. Chris Armstrong and Jack Kyprian each won three as Poppleton 'C' beat BT 'B' 7-3. Poppleton 'D' team beat Fulford Road WMC 'C' 7-3, whose Clive Warley won three.

Gary Neads and Brian Collier were unbeaten for Shepherds 'A' in their 7-3 win over York RI 'E'.

In division four, York RI 'F' started the season with a 9-1 win over York RI 'H'. Dennis Chapman and Betty Norman were unbeaten for the 'F' team.

York RI 'G' defeated Shepherds 'C' 7-3, Richard Leafe winning three for the 'G' team.

In a two-a-side match Nestl Rowntree 'C' defeated Poppleton 'F' 7-2, Peter Thompson and Richard Falkingham being unbeaten for Nestl.

Shepherds 'B' and Norwich Union 'B' drew 5-5 at Holgate Road, Rick Gledhill winning two for Shepherds and Tracey Sleet and Paul Webster two each for Norwich Union.

Two wins each by Paul Webster and Adrian Church helped Norwich Union 'A' draw 5-5 with INL 'D', who Mike Belton scored two wins.
