NOT even Michael Proctor's last-gasp winner could stop the 'Dolan Out' brigade from continuing to put the pressure on beleaguered York City chief Terry Dolan.

The Minstermen battled hard and a could have finished off Macclesfield by more than the 1-0 scoreline suggests, only for some wayward finishing to let them down.

Lee Nogan and Proctor, who missed a penalty, were the most guilty of not taking their chances, but at least the Minstermen were creating the opportunities, while at the back they looked composed with the returns of Gary Hobson and Darren Edmondson paying dividends.

But this was not enough for the 'boo-boys' who after remaining quiet for 89 minutes, began to vent their anger after a poor pass from Nick Richardson towards skipper Chris Brass went astray.

Even when on-loan Sunderland striker Proctor pounced as Dave Riddler failed to control Brass's ball forward to slot a delightful effort home, the crowd opted to chant 'Dolan Out'.

Some sections of the crowd did try to silence the critics, but they were out-numbered.

Dolan claimed afterwards he didn't hear the dissension in the crowd, but with a large section of the crowd joining in, there is little doubt he was putting a brave face on the situation.

The reaction of the fans was disappointing as York showed great heart and grit to bounce back from Tuesday night's 4-1 humiliation by Kidderminster.

Admittedly, Macclesfield were poor, but this was largely down to the dominance of City's defence.

Hobson, finally showing he is free of the months of injuries, was outstanding, while Matt Hocking was equally as effective alongside him, only blotting his copy book by giving away some silly fouls.

The returning duo of Edmondson and Graham Potter also gave City the experience they had been lacking in recent weeks.

City got off to a strong start early on and never really looked under too much pressure.

Proctor went close with a couple of good efforts in the first ten minutes, but Ric Lambert did pounce on a slip by Hocking to test the reactions of Alan Fettis.

Proctor's best chance of the opening 45 minutes came when Richard Cooper picked up Edmondson's defensive header out and waltzed through the midfield. The right-midfielder picked out Proctor's early run, but the striker's effort was well blocked by the Silkmen's keeper Steve Wilson.

Skipper Brass was driving his troops forward well and he was unlucky not to open the scoring but he drove Nogan's knock down over the bar.

It was all City, with Lee Bullock next to chance his arm, but Wilson managed to tip his dipping effort over the bar.

Five minutes before the break Brass had two good chances. His first effort was deflected wide, while as Macclesfield struggled to clear the ball Stamp and Nogan combined, but the combative midfielder was beaten to the ball by Wilson.

A 0-0 scoreline at the break was hardly a fair reflection on City's work-rate, but it was to be a similar story for the second period.

Proctor was again guilty of missing a gilt-edged chance on 48 minutes. Hobson's through-ball found Nogan, who crossed to the near post. Somehow, Bullock managed to hook the ball back under pressure from Darren Tinson, but Proctor blasted it high and wide.

Whenever Macclesfield pushed forward they found Fettis up to the task of keeping them out - with Lambert denied by the Northern Ireland keeper soon after.

City's faithful thought they were on the verge of scoring after 56 minutes when Nogan was crudely hauled down by Tinson just inside the box, but Proctor's spot-kick was stopped by Wilson.

Macclesfield sensing their chance pushed forward, with Lambert forcing Fettis to tip over a header and a 25-yard drive in quick succession.

In past City could well have rocked at this point, but on Saturday they picked up the pace to drive Macclesfield back. Nogan fired against the bar from six yards when it looked easier to score, while the hard-working front-man had an effort tipped over. Substitute Nick Richardson also saw his drive drift wide.

As time ticked down, the home fans' frustration that they had not seen a goal began to spill over and the chanting began.

The City players blocked it out and with just ten seconds of the allocated injury time left, Proctor chased down Brass' through-ball and capitalised as Riddler made an untimely slip. With a cool head, Proctor took the ball on and slotted it under the body of the advancing Wilson.
