A YEAR-long home upgrade is the way Nina Wilson will play her part in saving the planet as she makes the first PlanetYork pledge.

She has already fitted draught-proof double-glazed windows throughout her Ratcliffe Street home, in York.

Her future plans include introducing loft insulation, thermal-lined curtains and a new energy-efficient freezer.

She said: "I've done all I can afford at the moment, but I will certainly be doing more through the year. It's not that cold yet, but I've already noticed a change in the temperature of the house since the new windows were fitted. The aim is to conserve energy, and that will without doubt have an effect on my bills."

PlanetYork is a year-long project being run in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust, City of York Council, the Evening Press and other local partners.

Its aim is to make York the most energy efficient city in the UK.

It is hoped York people can set an example that the whole world can follow.

Mrs Wilson said: "I've always been environmentally minded anyway, but the fact that this project is in York has pushed me into doing more."

York was chosen to host PlanetYork for a variety of reasons, not least because it suffered its worst floods in hundreds of years last November - an event many blame on climate change.

The campaign's driving force is highlighting how everybody can make a difference with only a small change in their everyday lives. The pledges will indicate that you will do something, no matter how large or small, to play your part.

They can be anything that will cut energy use - be it changing to use more efficient light bulbs or insulating lofts, or more imaginative projects.

Schools and businesses are also being encouraged to take part.

Everyone who makes a pledge will get a mention in the Evening Press, and the most impressive entries will win prizes.
