YORK student Philip Graves has powered his way to the National Biathlon Finals at Sheffield.

The Archbishop Holgate's School pupil swept the board at the Northern qualifying round at Sedburgh School in Cumbria.

That gave him the overall title in the Youth 'D' age group, amassing 2,207 points - more than 100 clear of his nearest rival.

His younger sister, Victoria, finished fourth overall in the Youth 'D' girls group.

Four other York City Baths Club members competed at the Yorkshire and Humberside qualifier at Askern, South Yorkshire.

Charlotte Mason, eight-year-old sister of Tadcaster School's Lauren, who recently competed in the World Biathle championships in Bonn, competed in her first biathlon.

The Copmanthorpe School pupil won the run and was second in the swim to give her the overall gold medal in the 8/9 years category.
