THE University of York has been named one of Britain's best institutions for academic research.

Eighteen of its 23 departments, including Computer Science, English Literature and Psychology, were found to have research quality of international standing, according to figures published by the Higher Education Funding Council.

In a table compiled by the London School of Economics, the University is ranked sixth out of 172 higher education institutions and universities for research quality

Vice-Chancellor Professor Ron Cooke said: "These results are superb and improve even further on York's recent achievements. They place the university firmly on the international map."
