TOP swimming coach Alan Clarkson, from York, has won a major honour.

He will be presented with the Harold Fern award for outstanding contribution to swimming at the Amateur Swimming Association's annual meeting in Harrogate on Saturday.

Clarkson, 65, is well respected within the sport, representing Yorkshire, England and Great Britain.

He said: "I am extremely honoured to receive this prestigious award. I have enjoyed the time I have given to the sport and I hope my efforts have contributed to making a positive difference."

He was the British team's swimming manager in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal when Britain produced their best performances in the pool since the Second World War.

Clarkson had two stints as team manager. He was first appointed in November 1972, leaving the post after the Montreal Olympics before being re-appointed in 1979.

It is widely accepted that Clarkson's spell as team manager from 1973 to 1976 heralded the most successful era in British swimming.

Clarkson has also officiated at four Olympics as a race judge at Moscow, Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona. He was also a treasurer of the ASA and a member of FINA, the sport's world governing body.
