AN old friendship might prove helpful to Heworth on Saturday when they go for National Cup glory against amateur big-guns Oulton Raiders.

The Villagers, fifth in the National Conference League division two, entertain the high-flying premier division outfit for a place in the last eight of the top amateur competition.

And, although they are big underdogs to win, they can draw on the knowledge of public relations officer Ken Sykes to help glean information about their opposition.

The former professional is an old team-mate of current Oulton coach Billy Bowden and as such knows a bit about the visitors. Hopefully his tips could swing the tie Heworth's way.

"I played with Billy Bowden at Hunslet when we were both there," said Sykes.

"He's a pretty astute guy full of enthusiasm. He's got them playing a very simple game and they don't make too many mistakes.

"They are very solid and have got a few decent players. It will be a tough game but I'm looking forward to it - I wish I was still playing.

"There was a time when we could easily beat Oulton but they've had a good five years or so and have become one of the strongest amateur teams in the country."

The Raiders also pushed York Wasps hard in a Challenge Cup tie last season before succumbing 24-12 at Huntington Stadium. This will be their first time back in York since then.

"We're obviously aware they're second in the league and having a very good season," said Sykes.

"But it's a cup tie, a one-off. We've done pretty well this year in cup competitions and we're hopeful we can give our best.

"We're not going into it thinking we are going to get beat. If we can get through this we will be in the quarter-finals and in with a good shout, but it will be tough."

Nikki Wilson is a doubt with a back injury but Jason Kane should be back after missing out last week with tonsilitis. Otherwise Heworth should be at full strength.
