THE stairs to the Coffee Shop are quite steep. Once at first-floor level we found a short queue. It did not take long for us to be seated. Each table had its own menu and a specimen vase with a single flower.

We decided to pass on the soup of the day, broccoli and cauliflower, which with a roll and butter cost £3.05. Ann toyed with the idea of having a fruit tea but in the end opted for a breakfast mug of cappuccino. This arrived hot and frothy with a long-handled spoon. As there was no saucer it became clear why the tables were all glass-topped. Easy for cleaning!

Choosing from the selection of light bites and bigger offerings proved difficult. We both selected a granary bread base, Ann choosing cottage cheese, pineapple and walnut while I drooled over scrambled egg and smoked salmon.

With a generous helping of cheese and plenty of fish in evidence we were both satisfied.

From an impressive selection of cakes and gateaux Ann asked for what she thought would be banoffee pie. It turned out to be a banana and toffee cake which did not disappoint although the end piece found its way on to my plate.

My paradise slice was excellent.

Because we were in a china shop Ann felt no embarrassment in turning over her plate to discover that it was the Wedgewood floral design. Her coffee mug was also Wedgewood, this time plain white.

Looking round, other customers appeared to be enjoying sandwiches as well as items that could only be eaten with a knife and fork.

On this occasion the bill exceeded our £11.50 budget. However, we felt we had had good value. It was after 2pm when we left and there was still a long queue waiting to eat.
