JEWISH people are set to gather at the foot of Clifford's Tower in York tomorrow in memory of the 150 Jews murdered on the site in 1190.

The vigil, at 6pm, is being organised by the Union of Jewish Students in conjunction with the Castle Area Campaign Group, which is fighting to prevent a proposed major re-development of land alongside the tower by Land Securities.

A campaign group spokeswoman said the event, taking place just before the anniversary of the massacre on March 16, would involve candles being lit in memory of the victims of racial and religious intolerance. A rabbi would also conduct Kaddish prayers for the dead.

Stella-Anne Jackson, group co-ordinator for the Castle Area Campaign, said: "The daffodils on the mound of Clifford's Tower make a better memorial to the dead than would the proposed shopping mall."
