WHAT has Mike Usherwood got against cyclists (March 13)? Does he think everyone should be polluting the environment in motor vehicles?

Cyclists shouldn't be on pavements, but pedestrians shouldn't be walking down the middle of the road.

Cars shouldn't queue across junctions or yellow boxes and both brake lights are supposed to be working as well as their headlights.

What is it with York drivers and their total inability to put on lights, either in the dark or when turning a corner?

Finally, the red traffic light means stop, even if your car is expensive or has the word "taxi" on the roof.

...MIKE Usherwood's latest tirade makes me wonder whether or not he has a clue about who Sustrans is, much less what it does.

To quote from their website: "Sustrans - the sustainable transport charity - works on practical projects to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport to reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects." Still, he has managed to outdo himself by asserting that a "section of the community" (presumably meaning those who walk, cycle or use public transport) don't pay towards the upkeep of facilities - Sustrans or otherwise.

Come on Mike, we already know about your oppression at the hands of those who prefer not to subscribe to the 'Kar Kulture', but at least get your facts right in the first place.

As a member of his maligned "section of the community" I now find myself wondering where my income tax and council tax contributions are going.

...SUSTRANS provides facilities for cyclists, walkers, horse riders and people with disabilities. Many of these also are motorists and pay road tax. We all pay council tax to improve our transport network.

People cycle on the pavement for a number of reasons, the most common being fear of cycling on the road because of the excessive amount, or speed of, motorised traffic.

I suggest a reduction in the number of cars, their speed and prevention of parking in cycle lanes would get cyclists off the pavement, as would better cycling instruction to increase cyclists' confidence on the road.
