THERE are no signs of Golden Jubilee apathy among residents of a York village who have organised a major three-day celebration in honour of the Queen.

The Bishopthorpe Jubilee Steering Group has successfully applied for the closure of Main Street on Sunday, June 2, when a street party will take place.

More events are planned for the Saturday, Sunday and Monday of jubilee weekend. They include a gala followed by a barbecue, a fashion parade with music and clothes from 1952-2002, and an open day at the Archbishop of York's Bishopthorpe Palace.

Group treasurer Andrew Dunn said: "We are looking forward to it. Events have been held quite successfully in Bishopthorpe before, so we decided let's do something. I don't think there is a tremendous feeling towards royalty, but Bishopthorpe does like to party.

"It's a fantastic excuse for us all to let our hair down and have a great time. If people from other areas of York want to come and party with us then so much the better."

In Fulford, residents have complained of 'red-tape' threatening to scupper their party plans. One of the residents, Trina Warriner, said: "I'm trying to organise a party for Kilburn Road and Edgware Road in Fulford, but it's been very difficult trying to get through the red tape. We haven't had council information sent to us on street closures yet. We expect to get it this week, but once we send our application in and it's been processed we'll probably have about two months to organise the party."

A spokesman for City of York Council said no one has had permission for a party refused. "Our approach is to be as helpful as possible within the law, but we are also committed to helping people enjoy the celebrations without having to organise street parties."

The council has so far received five applications and eleven inquiries for street closures.
