JOYCE Pickard's letter (April 17) would have carried more weight had she not been strangely silent on the subject of the hundreds of Israeli deaths from Palestinian terrorism. She seems to dismiss Israel's pain as being almost irrelevant.

In this latest intifada, more than 450 Israeli lives have been lost in horrendous acts of terror. In terms of Israel's small population, this is the equivalent of more than 5,000 UK lives. Imagine the outrage and screams for response if this had, God forbid, been the case.

Israel warned on several occasions that she would exact a heavy price if the terror acts did not cease. Arafat ignored the warnings and continued to encourage the bombers and make compensation payments to the families who offered up their children for the cause.

All war is dirty and this one more than most. Innocent Israelis blown to smithereens in their towns and cities.

Now Israel is responding in kind. I do not condone it and have deep misgivings about how this is affecting Israeli society in general. If Israel is to be condemned then so must the Palestinian leadership be condemned. There is blood on all their hands.
