THEY'RE under starter's orders for this year's Great Yorkshire Show, with organisers determined to bounce back after 2001's foot and mouth-enforced cancellation.

The event in Harrogate, to take place from July 9-11, will include the opportunity to see some of the finest horses and ponies in Britain.

Following last year's cancellation, the organisers are even more determined that it should be a superb three days.

"The Great Yorkshire has a reputation as one of the finest equestrian events in the country," said show director Christopher Hal. "Certainly everyone regards our main ring as a wonderful setting - whether it's for show jumping, in-hand classes or the Shetland Pony Grand National.

"This, coupled with the White Rose Ring, makes competing at the Great Yorkshire an occasion as well as a challenge."

Before the cancellation of last year's show, horse and pony entries were running at an all-time high. The figure for the 2000 Show was 1,802. It is hoped that exhibitors will be keen to return and that the entries will again be strong.

Several sections include qualifiers for the Horse of the Year Show, namely in the hunter riding section, ridden cobs and private driving. The deadline for equestrian entries is May 14.

In total there is £29,268 available in prize money across the horse, pony and donkey classes with a further £23,550 for show jumping.

As well as the competitive classes, there are plenty of attractions with an equestrian flavour.

Ticket prices have been held at the 2000 figures. An adult ticket costs £12, over-60s £9 and children (5-15 years) £6. There are discounts available for tickets booked in advance. Car parking is extensive and free.
