Malton and Norton signed off the season with another ten-try haul with a 56-7 trouncing of Barnsley.

The sprinkling of rain had penetrated the hard surface just sufficiently to provide a good surface for running rugby and Malton did not disappoint.

Carl Rushworth was in tremendous form, along with fellow forwards Phil Ryan and James McKay, and constantly set up good ball for the backs to exploit.

It was Rushworth who opened the scoring when he powered over after five minutes. Barnsley struck back almost immediately and found room on the right wing to take the lead with a converted try.

Malton stepped up a gear and a flurry of tries resulted. Ian Cooke was the next to score and extended his record points haul when he entered the line from full-back to open up the Barnsley defence and touch down. Further tries came from skipper Chris Creber, Neil Gilbertson and David Webster and Cooke converted one to give Malton a 27-7 lead.

After the break Malton again stepped up the tempo as the Barnsley discipline began to disintegrate.

Young flanker Andy Mitchell crowned another impressive display with a marvellous side-step to put him in the clear and reach the line to score.

Second row Duncan Foster then got himself onto the scoresheet for his first of the season which means that every member of the squad has now got at least one try during the campaign.

Barnsley were then reduced to 14players when a prop was dismissed for taking a cheap shot at a Malton player.

By this stage the visitors were totally demoralised and further tries were scored through Tim Chapman and one from substitute forward James Machin which was brilliantly converted by Ryan to round off the scoring.

Once again Malton turned on the style with teamwork the key.

Cooke has scored a massive 329 points this season and Matt Richmond has been an ever present.

Hopefully Malton will carry on the good progress next term in Yorkshire Two when consolidation will be the immediate aim.
