IT'S about time City of York Council decided whether it wants to enforce traffic restrictions in York City centre or abolish them altogether.

At present, a substantial minority of drivers regularly rat-run Goodramgate, Colliergate, Fossgate and especially Coppergate during restricted hours, making the roads more dangerous and polluting the atmosphere yet arriving at their destinations much earlier than those of us who stick to the jammed but legal routes around the city centre.

The council, obviously believing its own publicity about its far-sighted and successful pedestrianisation scheme, and the myopic traffic wardens who are obsessed with checking tickets in car parks, are oblivious to the fact that York is not such a pleasant place to walk around and that the regulations are being regularly flouted.

In the meantime, their complacency encourages more drivers to consider using the shorter, illegal routes.
