YORK Brewery's expansion challenges the orthodoxy that traditional pubs are in irreversible decline. At a time when the Frog Hall has been lost and the Gimcrack is threatened, the Toft Green brewery is planning to double its pub estate to four.

Its success proves there is still a demand for pubs that sell good ale in comfortable surroundings. And the Government has given micro-breweries a long-overdue boost by reducing duty worth up to £40 per barrel of beer they produce.

The York Brewery has created thriving pubs which sell excellent beer. We'll drink to that.
