THE fight by All Saints Amateur Boxing Club to find new premises is continuing -with the deadline for survival drawing nearer.

As reported by the Evening Press, the club which put 'Hard 'n' Fast' Henry Wharton - Britain's only undefeated super-middleweight at British, Commonwealth and European level - on the road to glory is set to lose its home of 34 years.

There was a 'positive response' to the club's plea earlier this year but so far nothing has been arranged and the club only has until next summer to get sorted.

Originally the York ABC, the club has been based at All Saints Church hall in North Street since 1968, producing 31 champions. Other big names include 'Jorvik Warrior' Jamie Warters and ex-Amateur Boxing Association champion Tommy Neal.

However, with the church set to sell the ground for development, the club - the only one in the area - could be forced to fold.

ABA coach at All Saints, Steve Atkin, said there was an offer from St Paul's ABC in Hull to use its facilities, but the travelling involved could effectively prevent many of All Saints' boxers continuing in the sport.

He said: "It's a shame the club might have to close as we're classed as a big force in the North East with the boxers we've got doing well in the rankings."

Some ten lads officially fight out of the club, with more than 30 training regularly. Said Atkin: "If the club is forced to closed it could be the death of the sport in York."
