CHAMPIONS York opened the defence of their IT Tennis Mixed League division one crown with a narrow, but well-merited triumph over previous title-winners Fulford.

Both sides were at full-strength but, despite the appalling weather which forced several interruptions in play, York's formidable concentration never wavered.

Throughout the encounter they always displayed a keener edge to eventually see off their opponents 65-43 and thereby begin the season as they finished the last.

Both York and Fulford, plus fellow keen rivals Poppleton - all three have dominated proceedings for the past four years - are likely to again prove the teams in major title contention throughout the summer.

Fulford have strength in depth with Tony Precious joining them, although he will continue to play for Wigginton men's team.

Tadcaster have rejoined the premier division and start their campaign with the visit of Poppleton.

Wigginton are hoping to return to division one at the first time of asking after finishing at the bottom last year. They will have all first team ladies available this year.

Last year's unbeaten division three champions, Dunnington, start their match programme with a visit to York.

Bubwith, another of the unbeaten divisional champions, begin their third division fixtures with a visit to Riccall, who narrowly missed the drop last year.

The second promoted team, York, entertain relegated Sutton-on-Derwent in a division which, on paper, looks to be close.

Wheldrake and Wilberfoss, both up from division five, resume their rivalry straight away by playing each other in division four. Wilberfoss, who will be trying to reverse last summer's results, will have home advantage.

Division six has the appearance of another division which will go down to the final matches before any moves are decided.

It was one of the closest divisions last year with no team proving dominance and promises deliver the same scenario this year.

Division seven starts with the meeting of the two relegated teams Bishopthorpe and New Earswick. Newly promoted Sutton-on-Derwent visit Civil Service, who also went up in 2001.

Dunnington start division eight with a difficult match against Bubwith, who were runaway winners of division nine last year. York, who lost out on promotion by one point, will be renewing their challenge for honours when they play host to Strensall.

Escrick are another team who will be trying to bounce back after relegation and start division ten with a visit to Wistow. New Earswick, the other relegated team, have a tough looking test at neighbours Strensall.

The Yorkshire LTA Tyke York District Junior Tennis Tournament will take place at various venues throughout York on Saturday, May 18, starting from 9.15am.
