SILVER icing on a Pontefract cake could be sampled by the wizards of Wigginton Squash Club tomorrow.

The IT Sports Wigginton team, who wrapped up their debut campaign in the Yorkshire League premier division with an admirable third place, now go racquet-head to racquet-head with new league champions Pontefract in the final of the Yorkshire Cup.

The showdown in front of a full house at Pontefract Squash Club offers Wigginton the chance to sign off a momentous term with trophy triumph and they are expecting a sizeable contingent to make the trip to west Yorkshire to the home of their Pontefract foes.

While Pontey will provide top-calibre opposition, Wigginton already have a championship scalp dangling from their belts. To reach the final Wiggy's wonders eliminated previous premier league champions Heaton.

They will again rely on the quintet of quality that has performed so well this season - ex-English international Paul Hargrave at number one; John Russell ranked number 16 in England, at two; Duncan Walsh at three; Matt Lowery four; and club stalwart and sponsor Ian Tooms at five.

Tomorrow's hosts - 5-0-conquerors of Chapel Allerton in the semi-final - meanwhile are likely to field British and European Under-19 champion James Willstrop and British Under-17 title-holder Lawrence De La Saux as they bid for a league and cup double.

Two coach-loads of fans have already been booked, but further transport is being arranged from Wigginton Squash Club for the silverware-tinged duel. Any one interested should contact the club tel York (01904) 763567.
