STAMFORD BRIDGE hung on to the York FA Saturday Junior Cup by edging out neighbours Barmby Moor in a penalty shoot-out.

The early pressure came from Barmby Moor. A Barry Richardson free-kick was spilt by Bridge goalkeeper Matthew Waller straight to Jim Clark, but he squandered the chance right in front of goal.

Bridge came more into the game with John Wilmott leading the way with some darting runs. A measured cross by Darren Lee was caught on the volley by centre-forward Nick Rank to force an outstanding save from Moor 'keeper Kevin Pickering.

Barmby Moor went close twice just before the interval when Rob Bradley's shot was saved by Waller, and then a 35-yard free-kick by Kevin Shirley went inches wide of a Stamford Bridge upright.

Both sides failed to convert chances after the interval, although a header by Bridge's Julian Peck was just wide.

Bridge were now getting on top and in the last minute of normal time a Bridge corner was headed goal-bound by Jamie Rank only to be kicked off the line by Nick Williamson.

In extra time, Bridge held the initiative but both 'keepers produced excellent saves to send the match into a penalty shoot-out which went Bridge's way 4-3 with Waller saving one penalty and Kevin Smith netting the final decisive kick.

The 1899 Riley Smith Cup was presented by Colin Fawcett on behalf of the York FA.
