FIELD MARSHAL Montgomery was a bit of a card. Trying on hats, male pin-ups, those famous breakfasts, rushing round to the post office to collect his civil pension.

Funniest of all was his denunciation of the proposed channel tunnel. It sent him hopping mad. He seriously suggested that, once it was down and running, we should never again be able to resist a foreign invasion.

How we all laughed!
