CITY of York Council unveiled new street cleaning equipment today in an effort to improve the state of the city centre.
York's cleansing team, which operates within the city walls and inner ring road every day, hope it will give a much-needed boost to the operation and give them a new corporate look.
The council has come under heavy criticism recently for the poor state of the city centre streets and public toilets.
An Evening Press investigation highlighted how cleaning staff shortages had left public toilets across the city in a mess over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
Used syringes and bags of rubbish lay uncollected, while a vandalised chemical toilet was left unchecked.
In response to the article, the contract to clean York's public toilets is now to be put out to tender.
Meanwhile, York's Tourism Bureau has also complained that rubbish-strewn areas were damaging the tourism industry.
