THE family and friends of Donald Oliver, whose grandfather Whitby Oliver set up one of York's most well-known firms, gathered to say their final farewell at his funeral.
Mr Oliver, who remained chairman of the successful removals firm Whitby Oliver and Sons after handing over the business to his son Charles, was known as a gentleman in all his business and personal matters.
An accomplished sportsman, the 73-year-old was a former York squash champion. He was also a member of York, Catterick, Redcar and Doncaster racecourses, becoming a steward at Redcar and Catterick.
Other sports such as golf, cricket, shooting and fishing were also great loves.
Mr Oliver, whose wife, Suzanne, died last year and whose daughter, Victoria, died three years ago, was also a member of the Merchant Adventurers' of York.
His son Charles said: "He was always known as a gentleman. Virtually all the letters and cards I've had through have said that."
Mr Oliver died on April 27 in hospital. His funeral took place yesterday at St Mary's Church, Askham Richard, the village where Mr Oliver lived.
