A WALKER collapsed and died while spending a day at a North Yorkshire beauty spot.

Ambulance crews were called out from Kirkbymoorside at about 10.15am yesterday after reports that a man had collapsed at the Hole of Horcum, near Saltersgate, on the North York Moors.

Nigel Metcalfe, from Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said the crew arrived to find the man's wife attempting to revive him.

He said: "Resuscitation was being carried out before they arrived, but I believe it was found to be fruitless."

He added: "The crew said there was nothing more they could do.

"It was not far from the road so there was not a great deal of difficulty getting to the scene."

It is thought the 50-year-old-man had suffered a heart attack.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police confirmed that the man's wife had tried to resuscitate him at the scene.

Police said the man's identity would not be revealed until relatives had been informed.
