A SENIOR British diplomat was visiting the jailed North Yorkshire arms dealer Peter Bleach in his Indian prison today for the first time.
Sir Rob Young, the British High Commissioner in Delhi, was visiting the former St Peter's School pupil at the Presidency Jail where he is serving a life sentence.
It was the first time that the top-level diplomat was meeting Bleach, who is reported to be in poor health, face to face in jail since he was imprisoned in 1995.
Bleach was convicted of involvement in an arms drop in West Bengal. He is now appealing against his sentence on the grounds of discrimination.
Five Latvians convicted on similar charges were released in 2000 following their president's intervention.
