BONE marrow transplant girl Nicola Coates has been named the Best Learner in Yorkshire and the Humber.
Nicola, of Wheldrake, near York, is in the running for a national award.
Nicola, 27, has made a fine recovery from leukaemia since undergoing her transplant more than two years ago.
She was recently able to trace and thank the American donor who saved her life.
She won her regional Online Annual Award in recognition of her achievements at York Business College, where she became a student following the successful operation.
She was presented with the award at the Department for Education and Skills in Sheffield after seeing off competition from hundreds of other students across the region.
She is now a contender for the same award at a national level.
She was nominated by the business college's principal, Margaret Taylor, who said Nicola had been a "quite exceptional" student. "We are all extremely proud of Nicola's achievements."
Nicola said she had been delighted to be selected from so many applicants, and had really enjoyed her training at the business college.
