Another letter (September 2) warns of "swamping" by asylum seekers, this time from eastern Europe. Again I'm amazed at our determination to be nasty to these poor souls, regardless of the huge cost.
The millions we waste on detention camps and deportations drain resources that could be spent on schools, hospitals, housing or pensions. But we're supposed to believe it's all worth it, to keep out the menace of people who look and speak differently.
No doubt the anti-immigrant lobby will deny that's the issue. But if so, can they explain why no one ever objects to the far larger numbers of white Americans, Canadians and Australians who come to the UK every year? Why are they not a 'flood' or a 'swamp'?
